Abstract

In 1863, in the town of Galati, an evangelical school was established. Only a few years later, it was labeled as „the German school”. It was financed by the monthly payments of the students who attended it, from the aid of the German government, from various offerings and from the income it possessed. The administration of the school was carried out with the help of a board, chosen by the members of the Protestant community. The German consul, according to the statutes, was the president of the board. During the First World War, the premises of the German school were seized by the Romanian government. Thus, in premises from Lascăr Catargiu street, no. 16, the Martial Court of the 3rd Army Corps (1919–1920) was firstly installed. Later on, the Second Grade Secondary School for Girls „Mihail Kogălniceanu” from Galaţi (1920-1930) was installed there. During the communist period, the General School no. 21 functioned within the premises. Nowadays, „Emil Gârleanu” Special Secondary School functions in the premises of the former German school, Gării street, no. 66.
