Danubius, XLII, Galati, 2024, pp. 123-131.
Abstract
“Teodor Cincu” History Museum hosts in its numismatic collection a variety of coins that circulated on the territory of our country from the Middle Ages up to the modern period. The numismatic collection also includes several monetary hoards that were accidentally discovered and contain coins that circulated in Southern Moldavia between the XVIth and XVIIIth centuries.
One of these monetary hoards, that represents the subject of this article, is “Podoleni” monetary hoard, which contains 1,755 coins, produced in the mint of Suceava and which circulated in Moldova in the XVIIth century. The coins are imitations of the monetary issues of the Kingdom of Poland, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Holy Roman Empire. There are also several original coins of Wallachia.
The coins were previously published as having been discovered in Podoleni, without specifying any additional details of the finding. However, in one note of Professor Ion T. Sion, donated to “Teodor Cincu” History Museum in 2024, it was specified that the above-mentioned hoard was discovered in 1980, in Siliștea village, Umbrărești commune. Based on the available information, we concluded that the hoard was discovered in the northern part of the village, near the acacia plantation, on the eastern bank of the old course of River Bârlad.
