Danubius, XVIII, Galaţi, 2001, pp. 93-140.

Abstract

The article analyses several cultural assets that offered a certain prestige to their owners. The analysed assets date from the period between the XVI-th and the XIX-th century and they were discovered in the area of Galaţi.
The article analyses both items with a strict signification (those of lay or ecclesiastical use) and items with a more complex signification (ornaments or objects that suggest a social or a professional status).
Several more recent items, belonging to the category of decorative art, such as wooden icons, pieces of jewelry are also considered. The study focuses on the analysis of the spiritual environment of Galaţi area, a Byzantine environment with Balcanic peculiarities framed into an European context. The spiritual life of Galaţi was a synthesis of the above mentioned factors; hence its specific expression.
