THE CITY OF GALAŢI – A CHRONOLOGICAL AND TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY
Danubius, XVII, Galaţi, 1997, pp. 237-257.
Abstract
The work debates on the main archaeological, documentary, historical, topographical and iconographical reference points concerning the City of Galaţi.
The conclusion is that the city started its development and extension from the high plateau that overlooks the Danube.
The agglomeration of the most important buildings (especially those founded by princes and merchants) during the 17-th century on this place, as well as the archaeological evidence pertaining to the Middle Age – very rich after the 16-th century – guarantees that this area is the original location of the mediaeval town of Galaţi – whose existence could be logically sustained even for the XV-th century, and practically proved for the XVI-th century.
