A INITIATIVE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE COVURLUI HILLS – 1930-1948: PLANS FOR THE EXPLOITATION OF PASTURE-LANDS
Danubius, XXI, Galaţi, 2003, pp. 113-132.
Abstract
The Covurlui Hills cover an area of 1,361 sq.kms, in Galaţi County (South-Moldavian Plateau). In the period between 1930-1948, the Pastureland Offices from Vaslui, Tutova and Tecuci elaborated some plans (sustainable development initiatives) for the exploitation of the pastures belonging to the localities pertaining to each department. The plans provided substantial data on the physical-geographical position and conditions, the quality and the usage of lands and roads, the shelters for the animals, the duration of grazing, the works of melioration and the cultivation of fodder plants, the situation of forest plantations that were supposed to stabilize the eroded slopes. An analysis of the 55 plans reveals the condition of the pastures at that time and the actions taken to improve them.
