A HISTORICAL NOTE ABOUT A DIPLOMATIC LETTER OF ION GHICA

Danubius, XXI, Galaţi, 2003, pp. 47-56.

Abstract

The author brings into discussion a favorite theme of the Romanian modern historiography – the election as Ruler of Romania (after the abdication of the prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza) of a prince descending from a well-known European dynasty.

The identification, in a private collection belonging to the bibliophile N. Vasilescu-Capsali, from Bucharest, of a diplomatic letter dated on February, 26-th/March, 12-th, 1866, signed by Ion Ghica (during that period holding the positions of President of the Council of Ministries and Minister of Foreign Affairs) addressed to Earl Russell, Minister of the Foreign Affairs of England, confirms the historical information regarding the political and diplomatic actions performed by the new governmental authorities, during the vacancy of the Romanian throne. The authorities informed the Warrant Powers (England and France) about the election and proclamation as Ruler of Romania, of Philip I, Count of Flanders. Ion Ghica, a remarkable man of culture and an illustrious politician working in the service of Romania was also involved in this newly created situation.
