Danubius, XXXVI, Galaţi, 2018, pp. 83-118.

Abstract

The area of the monument „the Gate of the Turkish Inn” has undergone many damaging interventions during the Modern and Contemporary ages. On the spot of the monument, the investigations revealed several archaeological traces pertaining to the late Medieval period.

The archaeological researche was urged by the intention of the local authorities of Galați to identify, on the spot, within the protection zone of the monument „the Gate of the Turkish Inn”, code RAN/LMI – 75105.10/GL-II-m-B-03039, the areas having an archaeological value. The investigation aimed at an evaluation of the condition of the site and also at establishing which are the archaeological structures that could be restored and comprised within a future archaeological park. All these measures were part of the project „Valorizing the Monument the Gate of the Turkish Inn”.

In 2018, the archaeological researches opened six diggining units. The units S1, S3, S5 and S6, having the dimensions of 6-7m/3m, were realized in the Northern part of the area, S4, with the dimensions of 15m/2m (extended towards the West with 1m/6m, and, towards the East, with 3m/6m), was digged in parallel with the Gate of the Turkish Inn. The last section, S2, with the dimensions 10m/3m was opened in the South – Eastern corner of the investigated area. The sections revealed archaeological structures and complexes, from the XVIII-XIX-th centuries and from the beginning of the XX-th.
