Abstract

On revealing the great revolutionary power of the oppressed peasantry, that, during the spring of the year 1907, rose up in arms to get their right to life and dignity, with a high civic consciousness, the intellectuals from Galaţi put their talent and creative energy in the service of the poor toilers.
Among those who were sympathetic towards the tragic events which took place in the year of the uprising, the following are to be remembered for their original literary and plastic works: the academician Iorgu Iordan („A bit of history”), the economist Gheorghe Zane („The uprising reflected in the social literature of 1907”), the prose writer Spiridon Popescu („The madness of Stoborani”), the academician Paul Bujor („A tear, at least”, „The outcome of 1907”) and Nicolae Dunăreanu („On the meadow-memories about 1907”), the poets Grigore Hagiu („1907”), Ion Trandafir („A voice of eleven thousands”) and Viorel Dinescu („Land and freedom”); the painters the academician Camil Ressu („1907”), Nicolae Mantu („At an order”, „After the uprising”) and Gheorghe Levcovici („March, 11-th in Galaţi”); the sculptor Vasile Vedeş („The rebels fraternize with the workers from the port”); the publicists: Constantin Graur („The new factor. Before and after the uprising”), Ilie Tănăsache and Radu Macovei („The old people tell us how it happened”); the jurists: Zamfir Filotti („The agrarian issue in Romania”) and Ion C. Atanasiu („In the land of darkness”); the folklorist Tudor Pamfile, the school teachers G. P. Salviu, D. T. Faur, Vasile Macovei and so on.
