ELITES OF THE ITALIAN EMIGRATION IN ROMANIA – VERONA FAMILY

Abstract
Benefiting from a consistent fund of archives, kept by the family members – photos, letters, books, oral and written information – the author restores, very briefly, the genealogy of Verona family, little known until now. With a history of over 800 years, the first mentioned Verona, of obvious Longobard origin, is Iuanis Gaberto de Verona, a knight in the service of Marquis Bonifacio de Monferrato – comandeur of the Fourth Crusade, when he was appointed, in 1205, Ruler Tertiary of Negropontes Island. After 1470, when the island was integrated into the Ottoman Empire, Verona family first retreated to Scutari, then, in 1478, when it also fell under the Turks, to the bay of Kotor on the Dalmatian coast. Relinquishing the sword, members of this family played an important role in political and economic life, both during the Venetian domination of the Dalmatian coast, and in Romania, beginning with the mid-19th century, when Francesco Verona settled in Brăila. Through the kindness of the family members, keepers of a rich documentary fund, it was possible to restore the genealogy, iconography, as well as the historical course of this important and old Venetian family.
