Abstract
The article deals with the ways of adult education in the Romanian modern history. The main forms are:
– Schools for adults, with their precious role in the intellectual education of the masses.
– Popular evening sittings. The evening sitting is the oldest cultural manifestation which entered, by tradition, in the life of the Romanian village.
– Cultural centres. Cultural centres constituted one of the organized forms of mass education initiated by Spiru Haret.
– Chat and reading houses.
– Popular libraries.
– Popular Athenaeums.
