ABOUT THE ROMAN PRESENCE IN THE SOUTH OF MOLDAVIA AND THE ROLE OF THE CASTELLUM DISCOVERED AT GALAŢI. READING NOTES (I)

Danubius, XXI, Galaţi, 2003, pp. 15-24.

Abstract

During some excavation works, a new Roman fortress was revealed in the South-West of the actual territory of the city of Galaţi. The author of the archaeological investigations believes that its main role was to secure the valley of the Siret River, hence the fortress being connected to the other fortifications from Bărboşi.

Against this opinion, we suppose that the role of the newly discovered castellum was to conduct or/and control the naval traffic from the Danube to the Siret River.
