SEVERAL ASPECTS OF GALAŢI CITY ECONOMIC LIFE BETWEEN AUGUST 1944 AND MARCH 1945

The departure from Antonescu’s fascist military dictatorship due to the national insurrection of August 1944, as well as the imminent entry of the Soviet troops which had arrived at the Prut, frightened the administrative authorities of Galaţi City to such an extent that, deprived of any sense of responsibility, they abandoned the city in the evening of August 24, leaving it at the mercy of the Hitlerist bands which were in the city at the time or were retreating from the front.
The aerial bombings carried out by the Hitlerists two days in a row, the destruction of industrial and commercial sites, ruined or fired, turned the city to dust.
The patriotic forces, chasing the Hitlerists away, managed to re-establish the order, avoiding thus the confrontation between the Hitlerist troops and the Soviet army which was entering the city.
The events of August 1944, which put an end to the war on the territory of our country, left a disastrous heritage to Galaţi.
In these circumstances, Lower Danube Organisation of the Romanian Communist Party, restored to legality, begins an extensive campaign of economic reconstruction, focused on industrial reconstruction mainly.
Under the guidance of the local organisation of the Romanian Communist Party, the workers in Galaţi managed to surmount the economic difficulties as well as the patronal resistance, restoring, in a short amount of time, the production process in each industrial unit.

L’éloignement de la dictature militaire fasciste d’Antonescu dû à l’insurrection nationale du mois d’août 1944, ainsi que la perspective de l’entrée des troupes soviétiques arrivées au Prut, ont tellement effrayé les autorités administratives de la ville de Galaţi que celles-ci, dépouillées de tout sens de responsabilité, ont abandonné la ville, le soir du 24 août, à la merci des bandes hitlériennes qui s’y trouvaient ou se retiraient en quittant le front.
Les bombardements aériens exécutés par les hitlériens deux jours de suite, la destruction d’objectifs industriels et commerciaux ruinés et incendiés ont réduit la ville en ruines.
Les forces patriotiques, chassant les hitlériens, ont rétabli l’ordre-ce qui a évité à l’armée soviétique un affrontement avec les troupes hitlériennes au moment de son entrée dans la ville.
Les événements du mois d’août 1944 qui ont mis fin à la guerre sur le territoire de notre pays ont laissé à la ville de Galaţi un héritage désastreux.
Dans ces conditions l’Organisation du P.C.R. du bas Danube, sortie de l’illégalité, commence une vaste campagne de reconstruction économique dont l’objectif essentiel était la reconstruction de l’industrie.
Sous la direction de l’Organisation locale du P.C.R. les travailleurs de Galaţi ont réussi à vaincre les difficultés d’ordre économique ainsi que la résistance patronale aboutissant dans un bref délai à la mise en marche du procès de production dans chaque unité industrielle.
